Wildflower meets… KaHo Founder Kate Murray

The founder and owner of homeware, clothing and accessories company KaHo Prints, known for its hand-blocked fabrics from Jaipur, explains it was French markets and beaches that first inspired her.

Tell us about your background and key influences…

I grew up spending a lot of time in the South of France. Weekends were filled with visits to bustling markets and beautiful beaches — vibrant, colourful places that, back then, were blissfully quiet and largely untouched by tourism.

It was there that my love for colour and fabric first took root. I’d come back from holidays with suitcases bursting at the seams — full of French treasures: clothes, cushions, baskets. They were fun, vibrant, unique, and always admired by friends — not to mention, wonderfully affordable!

After a fantastic career that took me around the world and introduced me to some inspiring designers, creatives, business owners, and entrepreneurs, the pause of lockdown made me reflect. It felt like a ‘now or never’ moment, so I took the leap and launched KaHo Prints.

How would you describe your design style?

My design style is rooted in happy, vibrant colours and a love for things that lift the spirit. I create timeless, flattering fashion and practical, original homeware — always with a playful twist. Whether it’s a bold print or a beautifully crafted cushion, my aim is to design products that surprise you, make you smile, and that you’ll want to surround yourself with every day.

What are the elements that typify the prints you love?

The prints I love to create are pretty yet bold, with a confident use of contrasting colours. They’re never flat or predictable; there’s always a sense of energy and movement. My palette is inspired by the flowers of the British countryside — think wild Sussex poppies, cornflowers, foxgloves, Hawthorne, wild roses, primroses — vibrant tones that sit beautifully and sometimes unexpectedly alongside one another. It’s that balance of softness and statement that I’m always drawn to.

What are you especially proud of right now?
At the moment, my favourite clothing piece is the Lottie Dress. It’s made from 100% organic Indian cotton, which feels beautifully light and breathable —  ideal in hot weather. I’ve cut it to flatter different shapes and sizes, and it’s such a joy seeing how happy customers feel when they try it on.
For the home, I’m currently loving the Bench Throw / Picnic Rug. I have an old wooden garden bench at home that’s taken on a bit of mossy character over the years — but when I throw one of these over it (along with a few cheerful cushions), it’s instantly transformed.

Are there any eco/sustainability considerations that go into your range?

Minimising our environmental impact is just as important to us as the joy our prints bring customers. That’s why we put huge care and energy into making sure our raw materials, production processes, and products are as environmentally conscious as possible — and that every last scrap of fabric is used with intention.
We produce all of our garments and homeware in small batches — this allows us to use locally sourced materials, reduce waste, and focus on quality. It also means our limited-edition prints stay special — you won’t find yourself in the same dress as half your friends at a summer party!
Our cotton is grown without harmful pesticides or chemicals, protecting both the farmers and the surrounding communities. All of our printing is done by hand, using the traditional technique of block printing, which we’re passionate about preserving. Our dyes are AZO-free, meaning they’re lead-free, safer for the environment, and give our prints lasting vibrancy without harsh chemicals.

Can you share any top tips for readers looking to entertain outside?
Entertaining outside in summer is one of life’s simplest pleasures — and it doesn’t take much to make it feel truly special…
*Layer your textiles. Just like indoors, layering cushions, tablecloths, and throws makes everything feel more inviting.
*Mix up your tableware. Don’t worry about everything matching — a mix of colourful plates, vintage glassware, and jugs of wildflowers creates an effortlessly charming look. Add a few tea lights or jam jars with candles for when the sun goes down.
*Keep it simple (but thoughtful). A beautiful salad, good bread, and something chilled to drink are often all you need. Presentation goes a long way — think big sharing bowls and fresh herbs.
*Add joyful touches. Pop fresh flowers or herbs in tiny glasses down the table. It’s the small details that feel memorable — and don’t be afraid to play with colour.
*Don’t aim for perfection — aim for atmosphere. Music, laughter, a relaxed set-up, and enough cushions for people to flop into — that’s the secret to outdoor entertaining everyone will enjoy.

Anything you’re working on now that you can tell us about?
I’m currently working on our Christmas collection, which I’m really excited about! It’s a mix of brand-new prints and unique gifts designed to suit all budgets. My aim is to create items that feel super original and fun to give — something a bit different that will bring a smile to everyone’s face during the festive season. Stay tuned — there’s more colour and joy coming your way!
